-HE SAID-
Chiellini: “A fundamental signal”
'Character’ is a slightly abused word in football, but it’s the best suited for Juventus overcoming Lazio at the ‘Stadio Olimpico’. And Giorgio Chiellini is perfectly aware of this, but it’s not enough: “From the summer camp on, our consciousness and conviction of being capable of managing a great season have grown. Today, we’ve suffered and perhaps it hasn’t been our best game, but winning this kind of matches gives a fundamental signal.”
Such success gives extra energies which will be very useful seeing the close fixture which will involve the Bianconeri on Tuesday evening in Naples: “A positive result at the ‘San Paolo’ would be a further sign of improvement and growth, but we’ll have to play with the same character shown tonight. However, it’s too early to speak about targets. We must continue to work and in the next days we’ll check the mistakes made today in order to avoid their repetition.”
Buffon : “We’ll keep our feet on the ground”
Buffon’s saves show that Juventus were required to overcome a difficult test against an in-form Lazio outfit. But tonight’s captain insists the three points will not cause the Bianconeri to lose focus. “We’ll keep our feet on the ground,” confirmed Gigi. “Tonight we are happy about the result and the good performance but we must also be aware of our fortune. Everything went in our favour, we mustn’t neglect the merits of Lazio, who created goalscoring opportunities to equalise. We’re in a good run of form and the victories help confidence to grow. There will be times in which things go a different way and we don’t want anyone to be surprised if we should drop some points.”
Gigi chose to underline the great form that “Pirlo, Marchisio and Vidal” are currently in, but the same could also be said for Buffon himself: “Once I’d had the operation I had to do six, seven months of rehabilitation and I couldn’t immediately be brilliant and establish the dimensions and distances on the pitch. However, the continuity of work and always having new targets have made the difference."
Pepe: “I’m enjoying playing for this Juve side”
Simone Pepe’s first half strike was his second winner at the Stadio Olimpico in as many seasons. And the winger chose to reflect on the new-look Bianconeri following the final whistle: “It’s a different year, for our position in the table and also for the type of football we’re playing. It’s another Juventus. Now we’re enjoying ourselves on the pitch and that’s the best thing. We are a great team that plays good football and allows individuals to make their mark, because we always build from the back and never give the ball away.”
All three Bianconeri strikers were involved in the move for Pepe’s goal, but it was Andrea Pirlo who set them on their way with another magnificent pass: “This morning he underwent a fitness test,” explained Pepe. “He then received the ok before the game and thankfully played, because he’s fundamental for us. He’s a real architect on the pitch.”
Despite coming through another test unscathed, the winger refuses to speak about the team’s Scudetto prospects: “When we looked beyond the next game that we had to face, we stumbled. So we’ll think about the game against Napoli which will be incredibly difficult, in a red-hot atmosphere. Last year we put on a poor show and now we want to redeem ourselves.”
Conte: “We’ve shown our maturity”
Winning is always great, but when the victory came by gritting the teeth and showing new qualities it’s even more enjoyable. And against Lazio, Juventus showed their character and maturity, their abilities in suffering and taking back the control of a difficult game. This is the reason why the match at the ‘Stadio Olimpico’ was a “display of maturity” according to Antonio Conte. “We’re happy, because we clinched an important victory against a very strong side who will fight until the end for a place at the top of the table - explained the manager - In such matches, suffering is inevitable, however we’re satisfied because we’ve shown our desire to play football. During the break, I’ve said to my men: “If we get back to the pitch to defend this 1-0 result, we’ll lose.” So we’ve continued to create chances looking for the second goal and going through the suffering moments with maturity. In some circumstances, we’d have been able to better manage the ball, therefore we must improve, but we’re happy for this win occurred against a direct rival. But now we’ll have to deal with a tough away match which will be a further test.”
Juventus’ compactness also came from Conte’s choices which gave a precise design to the whole side: “I try to understand the health condition of the team and field those who are in shape, but we’ve other elements who always keep the first-string players aware. For example, Giaccherini and Estigarribia who always ‘bite the pitch’ when get thereon. Therefore, don’t think that this selection will be the same until the end. I carefully study our weekly work, my players know it and everybody tries to make things difficult. We’ve played the eleventh game only, but we’re going beyond every expectation. This is a result achieved by my players who always work hard, and I only have to thank them. Today, I want to especially praise Andrea Pirlo who has behaved like a great man. He’s fundamental for us, both on the pitch and outside.”
Conte’s touches can also be noticed in the improvement shown by each single player, especially in Matri who isn’t a fierce goalscorer only, but this evening proved to be a valuable assist-man: “A manager must always try to bring out the best from his players. Matri has room from improvement, he’s applying himself and he’s enhancing under several aspects. Today, he’s been great in passing the ball to Pepe. Obviously, with the availability they always show, it’s easy to make them improve.”
FINO ALLA FINE FORZA JUVENTUS!!
