Juventus Winter Champions for the 25th time
The title of ‘Winter Champions’ is always important. And Juventus are back to celebrating this particular accolade for the first time in six years. Fabio Capello was the last Bianconeri manager to do so, with his title winning 2006 side topping the table at the end of the first half of the season.
Antonio Conte has reached an important target which, in the past, has been achieved by many illustrious predecessors. Last night’s 2-0 win in Bergamo means that Juventus are first at the midway point of the campaign for the 25th time in the club’s history.
As far as the previous 24 occasions are concerned, 18 of these have seen the Bianconeri maintain their lead and clinch title success. Juventus lifted the Scudetto in the following seasons: 1930/31, 1932/33, 1949/50, 1951/52, 1957/58, 1959/60, 1971/72, 1972/73, 1974/75, 1976/77, 1977/78, 1983/84, 1985/86, 1994/95, 1996/97, 1997/98, 2004/05 and 2005/06.
Instead, the team lost their grip at the top of the table on the other six occasions: 1935/36, 1946/47, 1953/54, 1962/63, 1975/76 and 1999/00.
This signals another important achievement for Juventus, which comes just a week after Conte’s men broke a record dating back 62 years. Yesterday’s victory extended the club's unbeaten run to 19 consecutive games.

Conte: 'Juve are extraordinary'
Antonio Conte can finally celebrate Juventus winning the Winter title after an “extraordinary” first half of the season.
The crown of Winter champions is given to the team on top of the table at the midway stage and more often than not it leads on to the Scudetto.
“Our first half of the campaign has been extraordinary,” he said after the 2-0 win away to Atalanta this evening ensured they remain unbeaten.
“We played at a very high level and tonight was the crowning moment. My lads have done remarkable things, but now we must continue giving 120 per cent, as that is the only way to keep hold of the top spot. We are out in front of teams that were favourites before the season began.
“We create many chances, but admittedly do miss quite a few as well, so I guess that’s inevitable. Perhaps we should be a little calmer, but the side does play with great intensity.
“Atalanta are an organised outfit, so we needed a great performance to beat them. There are some negatives from today, as we hope Claudio Marchisio and Simone Pepe’s injuries aren’t too serious.”
Giaccherini: “We deserve the lead”
A beautiful, very important goal, his second wearing Juventus shirt, the icing on the cake of his high-quality performance in a fundamental victory. Emanuele Giaccherini experienced a special evening, and didn’t hide his satisfaction for his goal, the success and the Winter Champions’ title: “It’s absolutely great - said the midfielder - Clinching the three points was very important, because we wanted to preserve our lead. Perhaps being winter champions isn’t so significant, but we’re very delighted with it.”
With this way of playing, the Bianconeri can aim high, but Emanuele continues to keep his feet on the ground, while recognizing the value of his side: “The season is long, but we’ve shown to deserve our lead. If we’re stronger than the others? Well, these first nineteen games say so… I’m personally satisfied. I work all week to be ready, this evening it happened and I managed this chance, and now I hope to continue on this road.”
lichtsteiner A SKY: "We aim to win every time, if we continue like nothing is impossible ..."
Interviewed by the microphones of Sky Stephan Lichtsteiner has commented on the success dell'Atalanta obtained for 2-0 by Juventus. This is evidenced by the TuttoJuve.com.
As yet scored against Parma on an assist by Pirlo. At the third goal you promised some presents?
"It is, in both cases two assists fornt me beautiful and I thank him."
Easy to play with midfielders like him anyway ...
"Certainly it is true."
How important is the title for you in winter?
"It matters a lot but it was nice to win to keep its lead. We have done well creating so much today and I think there is any doubt about the victory."
The goal is also a message that should arrive in Caceres. On the right wing there is no room for him as your performance ...
"It is competition, then it is normal that when I will not go well on the bench, there is."
No problem so the competition for you.
"Absolutely not".
Compared to Sunday, you felt better physically or have worked more on the game? You have grown so much in a week ...
"I do not think we have done wrong against Cagliari, we could immediately close the race and we could still win in the final. We still run the ball better today."
We heard from league now?
"Juve must always play for first place, we are a strong team. There we set goals than to win every time, so nothing is impossible if we continue ...".
But what you said after fouled by Manfredini? It is seen a typical Roman exclamation on your lips ...
"I do not remember anything, seriously ...".
Marrone: “My most important game”
Luca Marrone made a superb contribution from the bench in last night’s 2-0 win over Atalanta, coming on midway through the second half to set up Giaccherini’s strike courtesy of a tremendous assist. The Italy Under-21 midfielder was the third home grown Juventus player on the pitch in Bergamo, with the Bianconeri starlet joined by Paolo De Ceglie and Claudio Marchisio.
And the youngster expressed his delight at the final whistle: “I couldn’t have asked for anything better, apart from that opportunity I had to score. But I’m happy about the team’s performance and also my own personal display. I believe that tonight’s game has been the most important match I’ve played for Juventus.
My relationship with Conte? Under his management, when a player gets on the pitch, he mustn’t just stick to his basic task, he needs to look to have personality. The manager gets this across to us, but my team-mates also help me out greatly. Above all, one who lets his feet do most of the talking, Andrea Pirlo. It’s just a case of being near to him and you’ll pick up a lot.”
Pirlo: “It’s good to be ahead”
Andrea Pirlo has commented glowingly on Juventus’ impressive start to the season and believes the team must look to maintain the same attitude that has served them so well throughout the first half of the campaign.
The midfield general, speaking on Juventus Channel’s 231 show to be broadcast this evening, provided a superb assist for Stephan Lichtsteiner’s opening goal in Bergamo - the full-back’s second strike since his summer move from Lazio.
Last night’s victory saw Juventus clinch the title of ‘Winter Champions’ for the 25th time in the club’s history. And the 32-year-old playmaker knows the accolade shows that the Bianconeri are heading in the right direction.
Pirlo said: “The assessment up until now is more than positive. We started with a new team and a new manager and have had a great run, taking each game as it comes, whilst improving our play. We’re happy to be top at the halfway point of the season, but we’re aware that the championship is finely balanced and we know that we still haven’t achieved anything. The judgements will be made at the end of the season, but for now it’s important to be ahead.”
