Conte: 'Back to business'
Antonio Conte is confident Juventus are “ready to get back to business” in his hometown Lecce and welcomes Marco Borriello.
The Bianconeri are still unbeaten this season and joint Serie A leaders with Milan, flying down directly from the winter training camp in Dubai.
“The Christmas break always holds some uncertainty. We were coming from a series of 16 positive results in a row, but had to stop and now there are a few question marks,” said the Coach in his Press conference.
“Having said that, we worked well on our heads and legs, so I am confident. We are ready to get back to business, because we are Juventus and we must not fear anyone.
“We know that Lecce have quality in their side, like Luis Muriel, David Di Michele, Ruben Olivera, Guillermo Giacomazzi and Juan Cuadrado. They’re not getting the points they expected, but are hungry for success. I expect a tough match.”
Conte spent much of his first six months on the Juve bench calming Scudetto talk, but now embraces their status as title contenders.
“I expect it to be more difficult from here on in, because our opponents did not previously expect such a tough Juve to stand in their path. Our primary objective was to recapture credibility in the eyes of our fans and seeing the welcome we got in Dubai and back in Italy, I’d say we achieved that,” continued the tactician.”
Juventus have been strengthened over the January transfer window by bringing in Borriello from Roma.
“We have five strikers and will use those who are in the best shape. Marco is welcome and represents another alternative, but still needs to get into the mentality, tactics and hierarchy of this squad.
“Football has evolved. Once upon a time there was a hefty centre-forward who would stand there hoping to put it in the net. Now a good striker in modern football has to take part in attacking and defending moves. When Leo Messi loses the ball, he is the first to try to get it back.”
Conte: “Happy about the three points”
Antonio Conte enjoyed a pleasant homecoming as the Bianconeri secured all three points against his first club Lecce. The win sees Juve’s unbeaten run maintained and the 42-year-old expressed his delight at the team’s attitude.
Speaking at the final whistle, Conte began: “I said on the eve of the game that the championship restart is always an unknown quantity. We’re happy about the points, even if we could have wrapped the game up earlier. In terms of performance, we can do better. I liked how the lads wanted to seal the victory, striving right until the end.”
The manager then looked to comment on the transfer market and, in particular, the recent acquisition of Marco Borriello.
He concluded: “Marco’s explained why he didn’t come here two years ago. He didn’t turn the club down; also because only someone crazy would turn reject Juventus. He, alongside Quagliarella, Matri, Del Piero and Vucinic, is one of the five strikers I have available. We’ll see what happens in the rest of the transfer window - I speak with the club every day.”
Marchisio: “We’ve got off to a good start in 2012”
Fortunately, the championship break brought no unwelcome surprises. Juventus have started their 2012 in the same way as they spent the most of the final stages of 2011: winning. The final result against Lecce (1-0) is certainly fundamental in continuing to travel their way at the top of the table.
This is what emerged from Claudio Marchisio’s words: “The temperature difference between our training camp and today’s match hasn’t changed things much. In the second half, we’ve had several counter-attack chances to seal our victory, but we haven’t made the most of them. After the championship break, this win on a tough pitch allows us to get off to a good start in 2012. However, we know that we need to further improve, just as our manager asserts. Now, we’ve the opportunity to work a whole week again, in order to prepare ourselves. Next games will be crucial if we want to battle until the end.”
Buffon sees renewed Juve respect
Gigi Buffon trusts Juventus are now “respected again by fans and opponents” as he welcomes Marco Borriello.
The Bianconeri ended 2011 as joint Serie A leaders with Milan and are still unbeaten, which is a remarkable achievement for a club that finished seventh for two years in a row.
“First of all we wanted to be respected again by fans and opponents, which I think we achieved. We never said going into the season that the Scudetto was our objective,” the goalkeeper told the Gazzetta dello Sport.
“I am very happy that Borriello has arrived. Marco will be hungry to prove Roma made a mistake in letting him go. He will certainly be an extra weapon for the team.”
Buffon also cast his eye over the other big transfer story of the month so far, as Milan continue to push for Manchester City outcast Carlos Tevez.
“I wouldn’t be surprised. They lost Antonio Cassano and he is not a player you can replace with the first one who comes along. In top sides you replace champions with other champions.”

Lichtsteiner: “We’ve done our duty”
Stephan Lichtsteiner started the new year as usual: running down the right flank. Even in Lecce, the Swiss defender provided his team with his boost, in addition to the contribution of the whole defensive unit which sealed the victory without conceding a goal.
At the end of the game, he spoke to Juventus Channel: “We knew that we would have had some difficulties to contend with due to their aggressiveness.
On the occasion of our first chance we’ve scored, then the defence has contained our opponents’ movements and this is a very positive detail. In such a match, we’ve simply done our duty because Lecce had nothing to lose. Winning is fundamental even when the performance isn’t the best.”
Barzagli: “We dug in and got the victory”
Juventus celebrated another clean sheet from today’s game against Lecce. The Bianconeri have strung together three defensive shutouts in a row after keeping out Novara and then bringing a halt to Udinese’s 100 per cent home record.
Andrea Barzagli, a pillar of strength at the back, stated: “The defence is doing well, but the credit also goes to our team-mates who help us. We prepared well for this game, knowing the risks that could arise with their quick strikers and strong counter-attacks. We knew that this would be a difficult game, also because it’s come after the break. We grit our teeth and emerged victorious.”
