Buffon: “We’re proud of being undefeated”

“It’s been an intense match, especially based on tactics, and I think that football experts have appreciated it. Both sides had some scoring opportunities, but the final draw is almost fair.” Gigi Buffon can now enjoy his deserved Christmas holidays, being delighted at being at the top of the table while also being undefeated. This is an important detail, because Juventus are the only European team that hasn’t yet lost a match this season: “This is a source of pride, and I think that after two seventh places, nobody could think to be able to achieve this position in the table at the end of December. Our target in 2012? Qualifying for the Champions League. This is high in our list.”

Conte: “We showed our resilience”

Antonio Conte has praised his Juventus side for the character shown in this evening’s Serie A showdown against Udinese. The manager hailed the attempts of his men to break down the league’s meanest defence.

After the final whistle, the 42-year-old said: “It must be recognised that today saw the two best championship defences come up against each other. Up until now, Udinese have always won at home, scoring 14 goals and conceding just two. This is why I say that we’ve shown resilience and solidity. Not everyone is capable of coming to Udine and creating important chances. We’re unbeaten and if when I arrived as manager, people had said that to me I would have considered them crazy.”

Conte adopted a different tactical approach for the game, reverting to a back three and bolstering the centre of the park: “Udinese, like Napoli, are a team that like to attack from wide areas and know how to exploit space. We prepared for the encounter looking to avoid being outnumbered on the flanks. Actually, we also play with three central midfielders when we go 4-3-3, because Lichtsteiner is often willing to get forward and therefore changing system comes quite naturally, also thanks to players like Estigarribia.”

The game was a tight, tactical affair in which preparation proved to be the key: “You must prepare very well for these kind of games, if not you can face several difficulties. We studied Udinese attentively and they did their homework on us. In modern football there’s the need to be well prepared and this is another reason why we’re unbeaten.”

Chiellini: “Another display of strength”

The top-of-the-table clash in Udine saw the league’s two meanest defences come up against each other, which resulted in a goaless stalemate. Both Juventus and Udinese pushed to break the deadlock, but neither managed to find the finishing touch.

And on the evening in which the defenders came out on top, Giorgio Chiellini commented on the Bianconeri’s performance, expressing happiness at grinding out a well-earned point.

The 27-year-old said:“We came here to win and we tried to do so. We weren’t able to manage it, and often lacked the final touch, but we’re still satisfied. It’s been another display of strength, I believe that few teams will come here and play a game like this. It gives us pleasure to end 2011 at the top of the table, even if we would have preferred to be up there on our own. Milan remain favourites, but there are many sides in the running.”

Barzagli: “This Juve is tough”

“We wanted to show a good performance, but this game was based on tactics and both sides blocked each other. Perhaps we’ve better managed the ball, but finally the draw is fair.” Andrea Barzagli finished his 2011 being absolutely aligned with the rest of the year: with another great performance, giving security to the defense, in spite of the system change: “We’ve already played with three defenders, it’s not something new. We knew that Udinese were able to be lethal with their counterattacks but we watched out for them without risks. In the first half, we also had a couple of interesting chances forward, while in the second half we had some more difficulties, but the result and the point achieved in Udine are absolutely fair.”

Juventus are enjoying their supremacy being also unbeaten, but they’ve now a new mentality as compared to their recent past: “We must keep it in the new year as well, because we’re doing extraordinary things, we’re deserving the leadership of the table, and we don’t want to give in. Since the preseason camp, we’ve become a real team. A strong, tough side which always battles without losing nor giving up, even in the most difficult games.”
